Business Impact of RecoverPoint 4.0

Business Impact of RecoverPoint 4.0

RecoverPoint continues to gather momentum within EMC with new points of integration appearing almost daily. Today I want to take a look at the business impact  of RecoverPoint 4.0, which was officially announced yesterday. RecoverPoint 4.0 provides a solution to two of the four tenets of application availability that I talked about a couple of days ago, logical corruption protection and out of region disaster recovery.

RecoverPoint 4.0

RecoverPoint 4.0 builds upon the fundamental capabilities of RecoverPoint that I previously discussed in the post The Six Differentiating Features of RecoverPoint and now offers the following functionality and business benefits.

RecoverPoint 4.0

Multiple Sites

Concern

Many organisations require a DR architecture that supports many to one or one to many replication e.g. ROBO architectures.

Solution

RecoverPoint 4.0 enables 4:1 Fan-In and Fan-Out ratios.

Business Impact

Simplified, cost effective architecture for multi-site replication or multi-copy use cases such as Test and Development.

RecoverPoint 4.0

Virtualised RecoverPoint Appliance

Concern

In the virtual datacentre, physical appliances are not always desirable and may add additional unwarranted cost.

Solution

RecoverPoint 4.0 enables virtual RPAs – Initially supporting only VMware and VNX based environments only with RecoverPoint 4.0.

Business Impact

Virtual RPAs enable a more affordable RecoverPoint solution and a solution that is less complex to deploy. Making it ideal for customers who virtualised their server environments with VMware, ROBO environments or Service Providers.

Potential 60% reduction in cost.

What is great about the virtual RPA is that it is merely the beginning of something even better to come in the future. It paves the way for per VM replication and virtual editions of RecoverPoint. If you are going to EMC World look out for the preview of this functionality.

RecoverPoint 4.0

Native Sync over IP

Concern

Historically Synchronous replication has only been possible over FC and fluctuations in write I/O or bandwidth can lead to a reduction in application performance caused by waiting for write ACKs from the remote site.

Solution

RecoverPoint 4.0 enables Dynamic Synchronous Replication over IP.

Business Impact

Enables cost effective synchronous replication over IP whilst achieving the best possible level of protection without impacting the business application.

Potential reduction in infrastructure cost when moving from FC to 10GBit IP LES circuits.

RecoverPoint 4.0

VMware SRM PIT Recovery

Concern

Automated failover with VMware SRM is to the latest point in time which could be corrupt. Requiring a different PIT in time with RecoverPoint would mean that SRM could not be used.

Solution

RecoverPoint 4.0 enables VMware SRM with PIT integration.

Business Impact

Enables IT administrators to choose a specific consistent point in time from which to restart their applications whilst maintaining the simplified process enabled by VMware SRM in the event of a disaster.

Reduction in Operational Complexity and therefore a reduction also in Risk.

RecoverPoint 4.0

Task Orientated Management

Concern

The RecoverPoint GUI whilst functionally very rich, is different from other EMC solutions and EMC customers appreciate a level of standardisation across EMC management platforms.

Solution

RecoverPoint 4.0 introduces a Unisphere ‘Look and Feel’ to RecoverPoint GUI.

Business Impact

A task orientated GUI with similar look and feel to other EMC product sets making it easier for Systems Administrators to administrate EMC platforms and reduce operational complexity.

Reduction in Operational Complexity and therefore a reduction also in Risk.

RecoverPoint 4.0

Enterprise Ready

Concern

Throughput and LUN limitations have meant that RecoverPoint was not always suitable for larger or more more write intensive workloads. Also many of our existing customers want to continue to use SRDF for remote replication, but also benefit from granular corruption protection.

Solution

RecoverPoint 4.0 enables 400MB/Sec distributed consistency groups (Gen5) and support for 16K LUNs, which will provide an aggregate capacity in the region of 2PB for source and target LUNs. RecoverPoint CDP can now also be used in conjunction with SRDF.

Business Impact

RecoverPoint is as applicable to Enterprise environments and it has been to mid-market; enabling features and functionality not available from other solutions. SRDF customers can not also benefit from granular corruption protection.

In a nutshell RecoverPoint was a great solution prior to this release. Now with RecoverPoint 4.0 it is an even greater solution with a future vision that will solidify it’s position as one of the leading heterogeneous replication and corruption protection solution available in the market today.
